長い友達 Terryさん

長い長い友人で、でも最近ご無沙汰していたTerry Whiteさんにブリスベンで再開して夕ご飯をご一緒させていただいた。彼と出会ったのは1995年6月　横浜　松坂屋でのオーストラリアイベントでの写真展　オープニングセレモニー。当時　彼は在日本　オーストラリア大使館文化部部長さん。オープニングのスピーチをオーストラリア大使館代表としてして頂いた。その時　オーストラリアの荒野（Out Back）の話でとても二人で盛り上がった。実は彼は元オーストラリア陸軍の兵士。ジャングル地帯や砂漠での多くの経験を積んでいる。その軍隊で得た経験を僕にいろいろ教えてくれた。これはそのあとOut Backでの撮影でとてもとても役に立った

そのあとも何度も彼とは飲みに行き、一度は大使館の中のパブで飲んで、そのまま彼の大使館の中にある家に泊めてもらった。アウトドアスポーツやバイクも好きなテリーさん。あるとき国立公園のカカドウに撮影に行くので、許可が大変と話したら「任せなさい」とのこと。彼の軍隊時代の部下がカカドゥのチーフレインジャー。かなり便宜を図ってくれてあっという間に許可が撮れた。まあ今から30年近く前の古き良き時代。その時解ったのだが、彼はなんとインド洋に浮かぶクリスマス島にあるオーストラリア軍のレーダー基地の隊長だった。なのでいろいろな面白い話を聞かせてくれた

あるとき、僕が金羊社からオーストラリアの写真集DVDを出すときに「こてこてのオーストラリアアクセントでDVDのナレーションをお願いできる人を探しているのですが、どなたかご存じですか？」と聞くと「あっ、私がやります。私はね　、クリスマス島にいるときラジオのDJもやっていましたから」いわれて驚いた。実際　ナレーションを頼むと完璧であった。もちろん　彼の日本語はとても流暢。もともとは政府の日本語習得ミッションで来日したが、日常の庶民の日本語も学びたいと考え、横浜の居酒屋さんで無給で2年間働きサラリーマンや学生の使う日本語も習得。かなりユニークな人

今回も久しぶりに会い、旅の話　日本の話、お互いの共通の友人の話などなど楽しい2時間でした

I met up again with Terry White—a long-time friend whom I hadn’t seen for quite a while—in Brisbane, and we had dinner together. I first met him in June 1995 at the opening ceremony of a photography exhibition held as part of an Australian event at Matsuzakaya in Yokohama. At the time, he was the Head of the Cultural Section at the Australian Embassy in Japan. He gave the opening speech on behalf of the Australian Embassy. At the time, we got on really well talking about the Australian Outback. In fact, he is a former soldier in the Australian Army. He has gained a wealth of experience in jungle and desert environments. He told me all sorts of things about the experiences he’d gained in the army. This proved extremely useful later on when I was taking photographs in the Outback.

We went out for drinks together many times after that. On one occasion, we had a drink at the pub inside the embassy, and he even let me stay at his home within the embassy grounds. Terry was also keen on outdoor sports and motorbikes. One time, when I mentioned that I was going to Kakadu National Park to take photographs but was having trouble obtaining a permit, he said, ‘Leave it to me.’ One of his former subordinates from his military days was the Chief Ranger at Kakadu. He pulled quite a few strings for me, and I secured the permit in no time. Well, that was back in the good old days, nearly 30 years ago now. It was then that I realised he had actually been the commander of an Australian military radar base on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. So he regaled me with all sorts of interesting stories

On one occasion, when I was releasing a DVD of Australian photographs through Kinyosha, I asked him, ‘I’m looking for someone to narrate the DVD with a thick Australian accent—do you know anyone?’ He replied, ‘Oh, I’ll do it. ‘You see, when I was on Christmas Island, I used to work as a radio DJ as well,’ he said, which took me by surprise. When I actually asked him to do the narration, it was perfect. Of course, his Japanese was very fluent. He had originally come to Japan on a government mission to learn the language, but wanting to learn the Japanese spoken by ordinary people in daily life, he worked for two years without pay at an izakaya in Yokohama, mastering the Japanese used by office workers and students. He was quite a unique character.

It had been a while since we’d last met, and we spent a lovely two hours chatting about travel, Japan, and our mutual friends.
Terry, let’s go to that yakitori place in Shibuya again sometime.
